The process of admission of students into Queen’s College, like all other Unity Colleges, as directed by the parent Ministry, the Federal Ministry of Education.
Prior to the year 2006, when the junior component (JSS1 –JSS3) classes was disarticulated from Unity Colleges through a policy that included it into Basic Education, Queen’s was running a six year secondary education which comprises JSS1 –JSS3 in the junior school and SS1- SS3 in the senior school.
Admission then was done into JS1 classes only, through a National Common Entrance Examination con ducted by National Education al Council (NECO). The senior component derived its students from the graduates of the junior school (JSS3) who transited into SS1 on successful completion of their Junior School Certificate Examination.
The National Common Entrance Examination is usually taken between March and April all over the federation. The result of the examination is submitted to the Federal Ministry of Education for ratification, determination of cut-off mark and short listing of those who have scaled though.
The list of qualified candidates is sent to the college of choice of the candidates for further written and oral interview and screening.
The final admission list is sent back to the Ministry.
Principals of the Colleges are invited to a place determined by the Ministry for the selection exercise. This is where the final list of successful students is drawn. These lists are strictly based on merit and they are in three categories: - National merit, State Quota and Environmental list.
Upon arrival to their various schools, the principals display the list of admitted students on notice boards. This is followed by the registration of successful students in the colleges.
From 2009 to 2012, when the Unity Colleges did not have JS3 student to fill up their SS1 classes, students were derived from other schools through the same process as in JS1 above. With the reinstatement of the juniors’ school in 2011, the college now has her JS3 students that will transit to SS1 come September 2013 and this will stop further mid-streamadmission.
